This course provides valuable information about alcohol dependence
and acamprosate and counseling patients with acamprosate. Studies on acamprosate,
marketed as CampralŪ, case studies of actual patients using acamprosate, model treatment
plans for case studies, a patient update report form and addiction and alcohol dependency
resources are also provided.
This module provides a brief overview of alcohol dependence, along with a discussion
of clinical signs and effects of alcohol dependence. It also provides information
about acamprosate, how it works, how it is taken, its side effects and how it differs
from other medications. Answers to frequently asked questions are provided.
To better assist addiction counselors with treating dependent patients, the National
Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) developed 13 “Principles of Drug Addiction
Treatment.” This module reviews the 13 principles and uses case study examples
to reinforce the concepts presented.
